Developers

Having now “properly” worked as a developer for a bit, I can relay a bit of top-secret insider knowledge:

Developers hate everyone.

Not everyone of course, just anyone else involved that isn’t specifically in their development team. Ideally, all developers want to be given a general direction, then left on their own to get there, with no interruptions. This isn’t practical, of course, and I imagine most producer/director/managers try to be as hands-off as they can, but that doesn’t stop developers being annoyed.

Marketing:
“Dur am make more like HALO!!!!1″

Game design:
“HERE ARE SOME CHANGES TO MAKE IT MORE LIKE HALO!!11″

Producer:
“Guys, four weeks to beta”
“Guys, wouldn’t it be better to do this other thing instead of the thing you’ve planned for?”*

Manager:
“I need everyone in a room so I can go over what ye all decided last week in the meeting I didn’t show up to”*

Other developers:
“Urr, the build you sent me doesn’t work”*
“Urr, neither does that build”*
“Hmm, this build that had no substantive code changes other than printfs works fine!”*
“As you’ve got a build that doesn’t work, can you help us debugging it as to why it doesn’t work? It’s not like you’ve got other work to do”*

* – I’ve seen this happen

Good manager, you’re fine, he’ll insulate you from a lot of it. Bad manager? Good luck cha!
